General information about Garmin Forerunner 15
When it comes to fitness devices, Garmin has always used its GPS feature to set it apart from its competition. At the relatively low price of 6,490 THB, the Forerunner 15 still manages to deliver a range of features, including the ability to track distance, pace, calories, counts steps and remind you to keep moving when you are inactive for over an hour. Also records you sleeping patterns. For an additional 1,000 THB, you can purchase Forerunner 15 Bundle, which includes a heart rate monitor. Forerunner 15 is compatible with a foot pod, which enables indoor (ex. at the gym) distance recording. As all the “into sport” series, the FR15 is compatible with Garmin Connect software, which helps you to analyze your training progress, save plans, goals, and also connect with other fitness enthusiasts (friends). It does motivate you to push a bit harder when see you see the training results of all your connections/friends.
The Garmin Forerunner 15 is available in black/green, teal/white, black/blue, red/black. For something less conspicuous the black/blue version would probably be the best choice. Different colors also represent different sizes. The black/blue and red/black versions are slightly larger than black/green, teal/white and violet/white.
|Black/Green, Teal/White & Violet/White||Black/Blue & Red/Black|
|1.58? x 2.05″ x 0.62″ (4.01 cm x 5.22 cm x 1.57 cm)||1.79? x 2.25? x 0.62? (4.55 cm x 5.72 cm x 1.57 cm)|
Larger FR15 has influence on screen size too:
|Black/Green, Teal/White & Violet/White||Black/Blue & Red/Black|
|0.81″ x 0.77″ (2.1 cm x 2.0 cm)||0.98″ x 0.94″ (2.5 cm x 2.4 cm)|
Fortunately, this fitness watch is quite wearable under many conditions. It’s fine to wear it in the rain or while sweating or even taking a swim (the Forerunner 15 is water resistant up to 50 m). The weight of the watch depends on the size, varying from 36 grams for the small, to 43 grams for the large.
|Black/Green, Teal/White & Violet/White||Black/Blue & Red/Black|
|36 g (1.3 oz)||43 g (1.5 oz)|
Despite being lightweight, it’s quite rugged and durable. Because the Forerunner 15 is relatively small, it’s no problem wearing it while sleeping. This is a good thing since it also has a sleep tracking feature.
Charging and Data Transfer
On the back of the Forerunner 15 are four small metal dots which are lined up with those in the plastic docking cradle for recharging. Once fully charged, the watch will retain its charge for about eight hours when being used for exercise and as much as five weeks if it’s just being used as a watch. The docking cradle also allows you to transfer information from the watch to a computer via a USB.
Located around the watch face are four buttons that are large enough to be easily accessed while exercising. The top left button turns on the light, while the bottom left allows the wearer to scroll through that day’s stats, such as steps taken and calories burned. The bottom right button lets the user scroll through various options and settings. The top right button initiates the workout and serves as the enter button.
Taking It for Run
Assuming you have the FR15 bundle with heart rate monitor (7,490 THB), you’ll have to pair it with the watch. For details, please check the video below:
While you are on the run, the GPS function is tracking your path. You can turn off the GPS, if you happen to be on a treadmill with the foot pod. Should you become lazy and come to a stop while running, the watch will eventually begin to flash “Move.” But then again, motivation is why you made the purchase.
Using the Software
It’s a good thing to have all that information stored on your wrist and access at any time. But even better having all the information uploaded to Connect and access it from your laptop, where you analyze your fitness data.
The easiest form of uploading your data is with Garmin Express. If it is the first time you are using Garmin fitness device, you will have to download the Garmin Express software HERE. You will be guided through all the installation process.
When the software is installed, syncing it up, only requires that you plug your device into your computer and let the software do the rest. Garmin has done an effective job of creating an interface across operating systems and devices.
When users are first signing in, Garmin requires personal information to create a profile. Part of the reason for this is that Connect can allow you to connect to others using the device. Connect may also serve as a kind of social network where users can talk about their progress or compete with others.
More about Connect
The Forerunner 15 comes with other useful features as well, including a calendar module that permits the user to track how often they have been running and graph how far they’ve run a week. It also allows for creating training plans, designing workouts and plotting courses.
Relatively inexpensive at 6,490 THB (w/o HRM). Connect software allows users to examine data about activity. While vivofit is perfect for office workers to move off the desk and exercise, the FR15 perfectly combine features for both, office workers and serious runners.
The software also allows for interaction with others using the device, which helps you keep your motivation for healthier living. In addition, the Forerunner 15 is quite robust, but not bulky, water resistant and can be wear in practically any environment/situation. It comes in 2 sizes. The smaller looks nice on woman’s hand.
There is no Bluetooth or wireless function allowing for direct upload data from the device, so you need to keep the credo around. It’s not that bad, but after using vivofit, which can be synchronized wirelessly with your iPad/iPhone, it seems a bit of hustle.
With its price of the Forerunner 15 is actually quite capable. Particularly for folks thinking seriously about their healthier way of life. That would include office workers or long distance runners. Via Connect, the unit provides the user with a lot of useful information to evaluate. Ultimately the unit fits nicely between the fitness band and sports watch, providing useful work out details for those on the go.
GPS giant Garmin, has entered the ‘activity tracker’ market with the Garmin Vivofit- a simple pedometer that functions sans GPS.
Vivofit records your steps, distance covered, and calories burned throughout the day, besides displaying time and date. By adding in an ANT+ heart rate monitor, the device can also track your heart rate. You can synch the Vivofit with your smartphone and/or desktop and track your fitness progress plus share results with the Garmin Connect community online.
Prominent players in the activity tracker market include Withings Pulse, FitBit Zip and Basis B1. All these are clip-on activity trackers. Some examples of wearable activity trackers in the market include Nike Fuel Band and Polar Loop.
So how does the Vivofit compare against competition? Is this activity tracker worth buying? What are the specific pros and cons of this product? We shall aim unravel all these mysteries in this product review.
The Viviofit looks just like any other wearable tracking device. It comes with two straps of varying lengths to accommodate all users. First off, I liked this concept, because too loose a strap, which will keep the device sliding all over the hand is extremely irritating. And of course a too tight strap is a pain quite literally.
And if you have ordered the heart rate monitor (HRM), it comes as a separate unit within the package, along with its own HRM strap.
A USB device is available for synching your fitness data to your computer in case your phone does not have Bluetooth compatibility.
And yes, as always there is a bunch of printed stuff that tells exactly how to use the Viviofit and talks about its various features.
But since you are reading this comprehensive review, you might as well completely skip all of that. Continue reading
